“It Takes a Village”

An icon is an important and enduring symbol.  It is also a person who is the object of great attention and devotion. When first I started this painting project, I immediately wanted to paint a representation or picture of a sacred or sanctified Christian personage, traditionally used and venerated in the Eastern Church in the 8th and 9th centuries. I have always loved the gold leaf used as halos and in the background or in the garments of the personages.  But my thinking changed as I painted.  I wanted to paint a female; I asked myself what person in my era I would most remember as having the stature of a historical figure.  Hillary Clinton came to mind. She has endured public discomfort, has learned the political system, mothered a child, focused on everyday people and was the object of great attention and devotion. She will attempt to fill a post as president that is a first in our land. Even if she is not elected as president, I am glad she is trying.  I feel that peace will come from a woman, because a woman detests violence and venerates cooperation.  I feel she is or will become an icon of our times because she is devoted to hearing all sides and in spite of politics, she will try to get our nation, the great village, to accept peace as a primary new direction, not just as an end to the present war. No mother could want war for their children.  She is conscious enough to know we need to protect our borders and our children, and she will be courageous enough to start the turn away from macho violence and the “King of the Mountain” mentality to conscious listening. Listening is part of cooperation; cooperation tells us we need the help of everyone in the village to raise the children, and the help and cooperation of everyone working together is a deterrent against aggressive tendencies. This is why I think Hillary will become an icon of our times.
